1. Overuse injuries
- Inflammation: tenoperiostitis (inflammation of the periosteum)
tendinitis (inflammation of a tendon or tendon attachment) / tendinosis
bursitis (inflammation of a bursa)
synovitis (inflammation of the synovial fluid) - Stress fractures/fatigue fractures
- Osteoarthritis (joint wear and tear)
2. Traumatic injuries
- Muscle tear
- Tendon / ligament rupture
- Dislocation
- Fracture
- Fissure
3. Tissue damage
- Persistent inflammation
- Pain
- Rest and Healing
The development of overuse injuries can be explained by the so-called “pain cycle.” Tissue damage leads to inflammation, which leads to pain. Insufficient training or too little rest causes further tissue damage, leading to more severe inflammation and pain. Only after adequate rest and rehabilitation have been completed can the cycle be broken.
