The liver produces half a liter to one liter of bile every day. Bile contains bile acids, hormones, water, salts, and bile pigments, among other things. Bile acids break down the fat we consume in our food. Bile leaves the liver through the bile duct.
In addition to producing bile, the liver has many other important functions:
- Regulating metabolism
- To produce substances such as cholesterol and bile acids
- Storing sugar and fat
- Storing fat-soluble vitamins and iron
- Regulating blood sugar levels
- Dealing with toxins that have entered the body
- To serve as a blood reservoir and to purify the blood
- To release proteins into the bloodstream
- Forming blood for the fetus during pregnancy.
