Are dietary supplements necessary?

  • There’s no substitute for a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle!
  • Dietary supplements are suitable for people who don't eat enough fruits and vegetables.
  • Vitamins and minerals are the mortar of the body, but if the mortar is not to crumble, the building blocks—which are proteins and fats—must not be missing.

However, vitamin and mineral supplements may be appropriate in the following cases:

  • The exclusion of certain foods or food groups, such as in cases of allergies or a vegan diet.
  • Low energy intake, such as during weight loss or due to poor eating habits.
  • During periods of prolonged competition or intense training, when a large portion of energy intake comes from energy supplements (e.g., carbohydrate drinks) with low nutritional density.
  • Practical difficulties, such as travel, when sufficient numbers and the desired composition cannot be achieved.
