Protein

Functions of proteins

  1. Proteins make up enzymes. More than 1,500 different enzyme proteins are known to exist in the body
  2. The protein helps produce hormones such as insulin
  3. Proteins act as transport proteins. For example, hemoglobin acts as an oxygen carrier.
  4. Proteins act as protective agents (antibodies) against bacteria and viruses
  5. Proteins are the building blocks of muscles
  6. Protein can be used as an energy source when there is an excess of protein; that is, if you consume too much protein, your body converts the excess protein into energy. However, this also occurs when blood sugar levels are too low, provided that energy intake or carbohydrate intake is too low.

Why protein?
